ABOUT

WHAT IS #PrioritizeChildCare?

#PrioritizeChildCare is the beginning of a grassroots initiative to bring subsidized child care and early learning programs to the forefront of legislation. Unfortunately, government structures continue to deprive people in poverty of necessary services they need to work and support a healthy family. Subsidized child care programs are increasingly starved of funding due to the privatization of the voucher system and the dismantling of the social safety net.

All people who qualify for SNAP food stamps and public housing are automatically eligible for child care subsidies, however, in New York City, there is only 1 slot for every 8 eligible children. When every dollar invested in early learning programs yields a cumulative eight-fold return, why do legislators and policy officials refuse to adequately fund subsidized child care programs? Doesn’t every child deserve high-quality care?

The question of child care poses a problem that lies beyond the responsibility of the mother, father, and immediate family. Early education programs have the capacity to stunt the cycle of poverty and allow new generations more opportunities for a chance at a healthy and fulfilling life.

Working from a social media foundation, #PrioritizeChildCare facilitates interactive workshops to change the conversation about the child care crisis through the physicality and imagination of children’s games.
